The journey of self-discovery can be both exciting and at times...challenging! It helps to have a few survival tools along the way to help make the road a little smoother.
Three things you can do when you are faced with a challenge:
PAUSE. Take stock of your surroundings. If possible, (without sounding a little odd if you are in the middle of a staff meeting), say out loud what you are noticing in your environment. Example: "computer, phone, long task list, boss walking over to my desk". Just name it. This will help you be objective and get out of your head.
MOVE. Go for a short walk, find a bathroom, hit the gym. Movement puts you back in touch with what's happening in the present moment and again.... helps to get you out of your head where your self trash-talk likes to hang out.
SING! No kidding. Ever seen the movie Elf? Singing changes energy. You don't even have to carry a tune. Heck...you can even hum. Focusing on singing shifts your attention to the present moment and connects you with yourself.
